Start with Remote Desktop on Mac

RDP Mac You can use the Remote Desktop client for Mac to work with Windows, source, and desktop applications from your Mac. Use the information below to get started - and check the FAQ if you have questions.

  • Obtain a Remote Desktop client
  • To start Remote Desktop on your Mac, follow these steps:
  • Download the Microsoft Remote Desktop client from this page.
  • Set your PC to accept remote connections. (If you skip this step, you cannot connect to your PC.)

Add remote desktop connections or remote resources. Using RemoteApp and Desktop Connections, you use a connection to connect directly to a Windows PC and remote sources to use the on-site RemoteApp, desktop-based session, or virtual desktop program. This feature is typically found in the corporate environment.

What about Mac beta clients?

We're testing new features in our preview channel on HockeyApp. Do you want to check? Open Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac and click Download. You do not need to create an account or log in to HockeyApp to download beta clients. If you already have a customer, you can check for updates to make sure you have the latest version. In the beta client, click the top Microsoft Remote Desktop Beta, and then click Check for updates.

Add a Remote Desktop connection

To make a remote desktop connection:
  • In the Connection Center, click +, then Desktop.
  • Enter the following information:
  • Adı PC name - computer name.
  • Olabilir This can be the name of a Windows computer (found in System settings), domain name, or IP address.
  • You can also add port information to the end of this name, such as MyDesktop: 3389.

  1. Account User Account - Add a user account that you use to remotely access the computer.
  2. A For a Active Directory (AD) computer or local account, use one of the following formats: user_name, domain \ user_name, or user_name@domain.com.
  3. A For Azure Active Directory (AAD) that joins a computer, use one of the following formats: AzureAD \ user_name or AzureAD \ user_name@domain.com.
  • A You can also select whether or not a password is required.
  • When managing multiple user accounts with the same username, specify an easy name to distinguish the account.
  • Application Manage your user account stored in application preferences.

You can also set this option's settings for connection:

  • Set an easy name
  • Add Gateway
  • Adjust the audio output
  • Change mouse button
  • Enable Administrator Mode
  • Redirect the local folder to a remote session
  • Forward local printer
  • Advanced Smart Card

Click Save.

To start the connection, just double-click. The same applies to remote sources.
Import and export links
You can export the definition of a remote desktop connection and use it on different devices. The remote desktop is stored in a separate .RDP Mac file.
  1. Right-click the remote desktop in Connection Center.
  2. Click Export.
  3. Discover where you want to save the remote desktop .RDP Mac file.
  4. Click OK.
