Components of Remote Desktop Services
IT can implement Remote Desktop Services using several instances of Windows Server that perform various roles. The main workload role is desktop hosting and Windows applications are Remote Desktop Session Hosts (RDSH). RDSH includes session-based sharing capabilities that allow many users to access desktops and applications simultaneously on one instance of Windows Server. The role of the Remote Desktop Services infrastructure applied on Windows Server includes RD Connection Agents, RD Gateway, RD Licensing, and RD Web Access.
Microsoft provides Remote Desktop clients for browsers that support Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, Apple iOS, Google Android, and HTML5.
Development of Remote Desktop Services
Competitive products such as Citrix Virtual Apps and VMware Horizon Apps use the RDSH server role. Other products can provide their own brokers, display protocols, customers and management infrastructure. Remote Desktop Services supports virtualized graphics processing units (GPUs) to enable intensive graphics applications. Modern Desktop Remote Infrastructure
In 2017, Microsoft announced a preview of the new Azure-based infrastructure options for Remote Desktop Services under the modern Remote Desktop (RDmi) infrastructure. The company provides the infrastructure roles as individual Azure Web App services for RD Connection Broker, RD Web and RD Gateway, not individual servers. RDmi uses Microsoft Azure Active Directory for authentication and workloads, such as RDSH servers, must run on Azure. RDmi is an easier way to enable RDS multi-tenant distributions.
In addition, in 2018, Microsoft announced that it will use RDmi for cloud-based desktops and Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) applications. WVD control planes will be free for Windows E3 and E5 customers with Microsoft 365 E3, E5 and F1 customers. Customers will pay Azure hosting for workloads that may contain new options based on Windows 10-based RDSH, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) servers, or multi-user version of Windows 10.
Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2019
Remote Desktop Services is included with Windows Server 2019, but some features are limited. It does not include new features such as Windows Server Desktop Experience and RDSH, Microsoft Cortana, Microsoft Store, and Xbox applications and services. In addition, RDSH 2019 will not support Office 365 Pro Plus, and vice versa will only use Office 2019 forever.
